For most people deep conditioning natural hair at home, the Kingsteam 2 in 1 Hair and Facial Steamer is the practical pick. It’s a countertop head steamer that Kingsteam designed for 3A to 4C hair. For a handheld tool that can also refresh curls between washes, PATTERN’s Hair Steamer is the choice (Search Amazon for PATTERN The Hair Steamer ; PATTERN sells it on its own site). If you want a salon-style standing hood, TASALON makes two. The Professional model uses a dial timer (Search Amazon for TASALON Professional Hair Steamer JY-150B ). The Standing model has a digital timer.
Nobody at Crown Care Daily has used these steamers. Everything below comes from each maker’s product page. Claims about cuticles, moisture and breakage are the makers’ own claims.

Which format fits your routine
- A countertop or standing steamer surrounds the whole head while a deep conditioner sits. TASALON’s standing hoods adjust from 37 to 49 inches. Kingsteam says its countertop unit’s adjustable nozzle lets you “sit, lie down” during a session.
- A handheld steamer lets you aim steam at sections, ends or a TWA. PATTERN also uses its steamer to “reactivate” curls and stretch styles between wash days without fully rewetting.
1. Kingsteam 2 in 1 Hair and Facial Steamer: best countertop steamer for home
Kingsteam says it built this “home-use steam device,” which it pitches as earning its “counter space,” to “deliver deep hydration for Type 3A–4C textured hair.” On the hair side, Kingsteam says steam “surrounds the head evenly.” It also has a facial steam arm with a “360° adjustable sprayer.” The maker describes an “anti-scald layered design” that lets you sit closer and “maintain longer 20–30 minute care sessions,” and a “built-in UV and O3 (ozone) hygiene support system” meant to keep the inside cleaner after use.
Kingsteam’s page doesn’t publish wattage, tank size or timer details, so you can’t compare those numbers with the TASALON models.
Skip it if: you want published specs before you buy. TASALON lists more of them.
2. PATTERN The Hair Steamer: best handheld
PATTERN made this handheld steamer to help “curls, coils & tight textures absorb hydration & the nourishing hair products you apply.” It says the steamer “works especially well for low porosity hair.” The box includes the steamer, a prong attachment, a diffuser attachment and a cleaning kit. Use the prongs to lift and separate hair “from root to tip.” Gather longer curls in the diffuser to steam dry ends, or hover it over ‘fros, TWAs and locs.
PATTERN’s directions are specific:
- Use only distilled water.
- On a clean scalp with healthy hair, steam once a month. For very dry hair, steam every 7 to 10 days.
- Steam short hair for up to 5 minutes and medium to longer hair for up to 12 minutes.
PATTERN says the steamer “opens cuticles” and “helps protect against breakage.” Those are its claims, not measured results.
Skip it if: you want to sit hands-free under a hood for a long deep-conditioning session.
3. TASALON Professional Hair Steamer for Deep Conditioning (JY-150B): best standing hood with a dial timer
TASALON lists a 650 W rating, a stainless-steel heating pipe, a five-leg wheeled base, a water tank with a recycle water container, and a weight of 12.3 pounds. The height adjusts “from 37 to 49 inches.” The timer is a mechanical knob, and TASALON’s listing says the timer “can be fixed for one hour.” Three rotatable holes in the hood let you adjust the temperature inside it. TASALON also lists a removable helmet and a collapsible body.
TASALON says the steamer “generates hot mist to hydrate strands and help hair products absorb into the scalp.” That is the maker’s description.
Skip it if: you’re short on floor space. It’s a full standing unit on a wheeled base.
4. TASALON Standing Hair Steamer for Deep Conditioning (JY-150A): best standing hood with a digital timer
This is TASALON’s other standing model. It has a digital display with a timer that you set with + and - buttons. Its bonnet hood “can be tilted up or down and rotates on the mounting bracket,” and it rolls on four 360-degree casters. Height adjusts from 37 to 49 inches, the same as the JY-150B.
Choose this one over the JY-150B if you prefer digital controls and a hood you can angle. Choose the JY-150B if you want the published 650 W rating and vent holes for adjusting the temperature. TASALON doesn’t list those for this model.
Skip it if: you want the published wattage and vent holes. TASALON lists those only for the JY-150B.
How to choose a hair steamer
- Hood or handheld. A hood suits hands-free deep conditioning. A handheld suits targeted steaming and quick refreshes.
- Check the space. The TASALON steamers are full standing units on wheeled bases. The Kingsteam sits on a counter.
- Follow the water rules. PATTERN calls for distilled water only. Check your model’s manual for its own instructions.
- Time the session. PATTERN caps sessions at 5 minutes for short hair and 12 minutes for longer hair. Kingsteam talks about 20 to 30 minute sessions under its hood. Start with the shorter end of whatever your maker gives.
- Pair it with a deep conditioner. Our fast-rinsing deep conditioners for low-porosity hair and deep conditioner timing guide for low-porosity hair cover that part. For the wider routine, see moisture-retention tips for low-porosity coils .
