Best Gels for 4C Hair

For most 4C hair, start with PATTERN Strong Hold Gel . PATTERN tags it for 4A, 4B and 4C hair, for high and medium porosity, and for protective styles. For a max-hold gel you can use on damp or dry hair, Eco Style Olive Oil Styling Gel is labeled max hold and alcohol-free. If shrinkage is the problem, Aunt Jackie’s Don’t Shrink is made to stretch curls. PATTERN Curl Gel is the medium-hold wash-and-go pick. Carol’s Daughter Coco Crème Curl Shaping Cream Gel gives a soft hold for very dry curls.

What about low-porosity 4C hair?

None of these five makers labels its gel for low porosity. PATTERN tags its Curl Gel for medium porosity and its Strong Hold Gel for medium and high porosity. Mielle lists its Honey & Ginger Styling Gel in a “Low Porosity Friendly” collection that it describes as “lightweight formulas that absorb with ease.” When we checked, it was sold out on Mielle’s site and had no Amazon offers, so it isn’t a pick here.

1. PATTERN Strong Hold Gel: best overall for 4C hair

PATTERN calls this “a flexible, nourishing gel with Sea Moss, Aloe & Chia Seeds that delivers long-lasting hold & a sleek look without drying hair.” It says the gel gives “long-lasting hold without breaking hair or edges” and has built-in slip, which makes it “ideal for a slick look of your choosing & styles that need extra support.” PATTERN tags it for 4A to 4C hair, high and medium porosity, and protective styles, and labels it silicone-free and vegan.

The directions are to apply it to wet or dry hair and style it into a slick look. The ingredient list includes PVP, VP/VA copolymer, sea moss (chondrus crispus) extract, argan, castor, chia seed and linseed oils, aloe, hydrolyzed vegetable protein and fragrance. It comes in 3 and 15 fl oz sizes, in the Original scent (neroli, rose and patchouli). PATTERN also sells an Indigo Rain version.

Skip it if: you want a soft, touchable wash-and-go. PATTERN’s Curl Gel is the softer option.

2. Eco Style Olive Oil Styling Gel: best max hold

Eco Style labels its Olive Oil Styling Gel “Max Hold” and says it “delivers strong, dependable hold.” It’s alcohol-free and made without parabens, sulfates, DEA or TEA. Eco Style says it’s designed for curls, coils, waves and protective styles, and that it keeps “wash-and-go’s defined, edges smooth, and slick styles polished all day.”

You apply it to damp or dry hair, work it through from roots to ends, style, and then air dry or diffuse. It comes in 8, 16 and 32 oz sizes. Eco Style lists olive oil as the key ingredient but doesn’t post a full ingredient list.

Skip it if: you want to check every ingredient before you buy.

3. Aunt Jackie’s Don’t Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel: best for shrinkage

Aunt Jackie’s says this gel “gives beautiful stretch to shriveling curls without flaking or caking.” It says the gel works best on clean, wet or damp hair, and that you should apply more for tighter curls and less for more elongated curls. For a wash-and-go, rake it through with your fingers and finger-style. For twists and coils, apply it section by section and comb it through from roots to ends before you twist, braid or knot.

The ingredient list includes glycerin, carbomer, hydrolyzed wheat protein, linseed (flaxseed) oil, PVP and fragrance. No silicones appear. It comes in a 15 oz jar.

Skip it if: protein makes your hair feel stiff. Hydrolyzed wheat protein is fifth on the list.

4. PATTERN Curl Gel: best medium hold for wash-and-gos

PATTERN calls its Curl Gel “a dream for defined, bouncy & juicy curls looking for medium hold.” It says the formula leaves hair “flexible, springy & touchable.” It credits aloe, coconut oil and cacay oil. PATTERN tags it for 3B to 4C hair and medium porosity, and labels it silicone-free. Apply it to wet hair for wash-and-gos, braid-outs and twist-outs, or to damp or dry hair for slick looks.

The ingredient list includes glycerin, aloe, coconut oil, wheat amino acids, hydrolyzed silk and fragrance. It comes in 3, 9.8 and 25 fl oz sizes. The Amazon link here is the 25 fl oz bottle.

Skip it if: you need a firm cast for a sleek bun. PATTERN’s Strong Hold Gel or Eco Style hold harder.

5. Carol’s Daughter Coco Crème Curl Shaping Cream Gel: best soft hold for very dry hair

Carol’s Daughter says this cream gel “adds definition while providing a soft, natural hold that lasts all day and won’t dry out your hair,” with no “crunch, flakes, stiffness or residue.” It lists the hair type as very dry curly hair. It’s made with coconut oil, coconut milk, mango butter and murumuru butter, and the maker lists it as free of parabens, silicones, petrolatum, mineral oil and artificial colors.

Apply a small amount evenly from roots to tips on clean, wet or damp hair, add more as needed, and don’t rinse it out. It comes in a 16 oz jar. Carol’s Daughter doesn’t post the full ingredient list.

Skip it if: you want a firm cast. Carol’s Daughter describes this as a soft, natural hold.

How to choose a gel for 4C hair

Match hold to the style. PATTERN pitches Strong Hold for slick looks, and Eco Style says its gel keeps slick styles polished. PATTERN pitches its medium-hold Curl Gel for wash-and-gos.
Check the porosity tags. PATTERN is the only maker here that tags gels by porosity. Strong Hold covers high and medium porosity. Curl Gel covers medium.
Decide on protein. PATTERN Strong Hold, PATTERN Curl Gel and Aunt Jackie’s all list proteins or amino acids. Carol’s Daughter and Eco Style don’t post full lists.
Apply on the hair the maker specifies. Aunt Jackie’s and Carol’s Daughter work best on clean, wet or damp hair. PATTERN Strong Hold and Eco Style work on wet or dry hair.
